Comic novels of Marina Lewycka
Marina Lewycka, born of Ukrainian parents in a refugee camp in Kiel in the wake of World War 2, grew up in England. After gaining higher degree in English literature, she lectured in media studies, and it was only when she was about to retire that she took a creative writing course which motivated her to use some of her family history in a novel: A short history of tractors in Ukrainian. In spite of the title ( actually you can skip the bits about tractors ) this novel instantly attracted prizes for comic fiction in 2005, and a readership attracted by her compassionate but bitingly funny depicture of predicaments of migrants in multi-cultural England. Two more novels followed: Two caravans (tales from rural labour migrants) and We are all made of glue, centred on an eccentric Jewish woman living in a crumbling London mansion, conserving secrets that stem from that horrifying period when Jews were fleeing to other countries to escape the Nazis.Copies of these novels are available at Exclusive Books, Westville, and at various branches of the Municipal library
