Listening to Music - the Attentive ear - Mondays Oct 3 to Oct 31
This forthcoming series of lectures on “Listening to Music – the Attentive Ear” is aimed at anyone who enjoys listening to music and would like to be a little more informed about the background to what they hear.[Series of four 2 hour lectures]
The series of four lectures (Mondays, through October 2011) will follow the course of Classical Western Music through Medieval and Renaissance periods, Baroque and Classical and on to 19th and 20th century music focussing on the instruments of the various periods, the composers and what to listen for in each period.
About the presenter
Ted Brien conducted the KZN Youth Orchestra for a number of years and has a long association with various Youth Orchestras in this part of the world.. He currently directs the Durban Girls College Orchestra and has recently returned from a concert tour with them in the UK and Ireland. He holds a Masters Degree in music (UKZN) and was Head of the Music Department at Springfield College of Education. For many years he was leader of the Montpelier Players, a chamber ensemble that regularly broadcast and performed in and around KwaZulu Natal. He has a long experience of lecturing on various aspects of music and was part of the team that presents the pre-concert talks during the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s Symphony Season.
